31.01.2018. Greylag Goose (Anser anser) 12 at Brusviti wild horses pasture, Nica county (I.Mednis). First migrants? Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) 1 F/2cy at Daugava river, Daugavpils (A.Erts). Redwing (Turdus iliacus) 1 at Darzini, Riga (A.Klepers). Both species quite rare during winter months.
30.01.2018. Taiga Bean Goose (Anser fabalis) 14; Tundra Bean Goose (Anser serrirostris) 5; Greylag Goose (Anser anser) 14 at Nica fields, Nica county (K.Millers). Most likely part of the flock of ~2000 Anser sp. which present at surroundings in variable numbers at least since 22.12.2017. Section "Local wintering birds 2017/2018". However, can not exclude that at least Greylag Goose and possibly Taiga Bean Geese are first migrants. Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) 1 F/2cy at Nica fields, Nica county (K.Millers). Quite rare during winter months.
29.01.2018. Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) 1 M with Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) at Venta river, Kuldiga (R.Rekmanis). Category E record. Great Egret (Ardea alba) 1 flew over at Lilaste lake, Carnikava county (A.Klepers). Rare during winter months. Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) 1 at Durupe surroundings, Balvi county (G.Grandans, D.Farrow). Present since 04.12.2017. (E.Kantans).
28.01.2018. Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) 1 at Skulte surroundings, Limbazi county (G.Grandans, D.Farrow). Present since 16.12.2017. (E.Ogsta).
27.01.2018. Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) 1 in Saka river, Pavilosta (A.Klepers, R.Rekmanis). Stock Dove (Columba oenas) 2 to SW at Cirstes, Dundaga county (K.Millers, I.Grinerte). Both species quite rare during winter months.
26.01.2018. Anser Goose (Anser sp.) 5 - 7 flew over Durbe lake, Durbe county (R.Jurjans). Rare during winter months.
25.01.2018. Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) 1 at Sausa Daugava, Kekava county (K.Millers). Rare during winter months. Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) 1 at Gluda, Jelgava county (M.Jaunzemis). Present since 16.01.2018. (A.Kalvans).

24.01.2018. Gadwall (Anas strepera) 1 ad M at Kekavina river, Kekava (R.Grinerte et al.). Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) 1 at Ventas Rumba, Kuldiga (A.Tjagunovics). Both species rare during winter months.
23.01.2018. Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) 1 F/2cy at Ezerkrasts area, Liepaja (G.Grandans, R.Rekmanis). Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) 1 F/2cy at Cirava, Aizpute county (G.Grandans, R.Rekmanis). Stock Dove (Columba oenas) 1 at Nica fields, Nica county (G.Grandans, R.Rekmanis). Common Wood Pigeon (Columba palumubus) 1 at Nica fields, Nica county (G.Grandans). Skylark (Alauda arvensis) 1 at Liepaja S pier, Liepaja (G.Grandans). Robin (Erithacus rubecula) 1 at Kviesu street, Liepaja (G.Grandans, R.Rekmanis). All species rare during winter months.
21.01.2018. Great Egret (Ardea alba) 1 at Ostvalda canal, Kekava county (K.Millers, I.Grinerte). Robin (Erithacus rubecula) 1 at Gauja river mouth reeds, Carnikava county (K.Funts). Both species rare during winter months. Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) >2 in the flock of ~150 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Priekule, Priekule county (R.Rekmanis).
20.01.2018. Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) 1 at Mangalsala pier, Riga (I.Denisovs). Present since 19.01.2017. (I.Denisovs). Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) 1 in Gauja river at Sinole, Gulbene county (G.Grandans, E.Kantans). Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) 3 migrating SW at Ezere, Saldus county (V.Jaunzemis). All species rare during winter months. Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) 1 at Liciems surroundings, Aloja conty (A.Klepers). Present since 18.01.2018. (V.Vintulis). Redwing (Turdus iliacus) 1 at Mangalsala, Riga (I.Denisovs). Rare during winter months.



19.01.2018. Tundra Bean Goose (Anser serrirostris) 42; Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) 3 at Durbe surroundings, Durbe county (K.Millers). At the same area seen on 14.12.2017., when ~400 Anser sp. and on 06.01.2018., when ~800 Anser sp. (A.Klepers). Smew (Mergellus albellus) ~80 in Liepaja lake opposite Zirgu and Atteku islets, Liepaja (K.Millers, R.Rekmanis). Large number at one place during winter months. Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus) 2 ad MM and 1 F/2cy at Nice fields, Nica county (K.Millers), 1 ad M at Zirgu islet, Liepaja (R.Rekmanis). Hen Harriers at Nica fields present at least since 22.12.2014, when 1 ad M and 1 F/2cy (K.Millers, I.Grinerte). Moorhen (Galinula chloropus) 1 at Zirgu islet, Liepaja (R.Rekmanis). Jack Snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus) 1 at Sausa Daugava, Salaspils / Kekava county (A.Klepers). All species rare during winter months. Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) 1 at Durupe surroundings, Balvi county (E.Kantans). Present since 04.12.2017. (E.Kantans). Redwing (Turdus iliacus) 1 at Rainis Park; Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) 1 at Zirgu islet, Liepaja (R.Rekmanis). Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis) 1 at Ezerkrasts meadow near bird tower, Liepaja (K.Millers). Redwing, Song Trush and Meadow Pipit rare during winter months. Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) 6-7; Twite (Linaria flavirostris) 1 in the flock of Yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella), Greenfinches (Chloris chloris) and Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Adazi fields, Adazi county (I.Denisovs).





18.01.2018. Merlin (Falco columbarius) 1 F/2cy at Vecdaugava, Riga (I.Denisovs). Rare during winter months. Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) 1 2cy at Darzini distributary, Salaspils county (M.Kilups). Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) 1 at Berzupe, Liepna parish, Aluksne county (S.Laime). Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) 4 in the flock with 20 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Vecdaugava, Riga (I.Denisovs), at least 1 in the flock with ca 300 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Durupe surroundings, Balvi county (G.Grandans).



17.01.2018. Great Egret (Ardea alba) 1 at Saka river; Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) 2 flushed; Redwing (Turdus iliacus) 2 locally ; Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) 1 locallyat Pavilosta, Pavilosta county (R.Rekmanis, V.Videnieks). All species rare during winter months.


16.01.2018. Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) 1 M in Donavina river, Limbazi (G.Grandans, R.Lucietti). Common Pochard (Aythia ferina) 1 M at Ciecere river, Saldus, Saldus county (A.Mankus, V.Jaunzemis). Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) 1 in the ditch at Adazi military landfill, Adazi county (I.Mardega). All species rare during winter months.
15.01.2018. Gadwall (Anas strepera) 1 F at Cirava, Aizpute county; Common Teal (Anas crecca) 1 F at Alokste river, Apriki surroundings, Aizpute county (R.Rekmanis). Merlin (Falco columbarius) 1 F/2cy at Bolderaja, Riga (K.Millers). Rare during winter months. Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) 2 at Cirava, Aizpute county (R.Rekmanis). All species rare during winter months. Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemann) 1 M in the flock of ~200 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Apriki surroundings, Aizpute county (R.Rekmanis).
14.01.2018. Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) 1; Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) 1 M/2cy in the ditch at Laveri, Carnikava county (I.Grinerte et al.). White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) 1 at Skanstenieki surroundings, Plavinas county (G.Grandans). Present since 26.12.2017. (G.Grandans et al.). Freely flying and self-sustaining. Wood Pigeon (columba palumbus) 4 at Zalu street, Liepaja (R.Rekmanis). Robin (Erithacus rubecula) 1 at Ranki surroundings near mill bridge over Iecava river, Iecava county (E.Laucis). All species rare during winter months.
13.01.2018. Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) >9 in the flock of ~40 Anser sp. Geese at Liepaja lake, Liepaja (K.Millers). On 07.01.2017. at the same area flock of 23 Canada Geese were present (V. & M.Jaunzmis). Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) 1 M in Lielupe river at Lepsas, Rundale county (E.Laucis), 1 F/2cy at Biekengravis, Riga (J.Vigulis). Great Egret (Ardea alba) 5 at Kekava rapids at Sausa Daugava, Kekava county (A.Platais). Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) 1 flushed at Ligupe - Paurupe canal, Rucava county (I.Mednis). Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) 1 at Saraiki surroundings, Pavilosta county (M.Kilups). All species rare during winter months. Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) 1 at Atmodas blvd., Liepaja (K.Millers). Present at least since 15.10.2011. (D.Krigens). Robin (Erithacus rubecula) 1 at Kazdanga surroundings, Aizpute county (R.Rekmanis). White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) 1 at Sunupe, Daugavpils (A.Erts). Present since 26.12.2017. (A.Erts). Robin and White Wagtail rare during winter months. Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) 1 together with 16 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Zakusala, Riga (J.Vigulis), 1 in the flock of ~60 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Kangarkalns surroundings, Limbazi county (G.Grandans, N.Weiss).
12.01.2018. Common Crane (Grus grus) 7 in low flight to S over Brivibas and Pulvera str. crossroads, Liepaja (A.Ozolins). Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) 6 (4 + 2); Robin (Erithacus rubecula) 1 at Seaside Park, Liepaja (K.Millers), 1 at Toma str., Liepaja (I.Mednis). Redwing (Turdus iliacus) 1 at Darzini, Riga (G.Grandans, N.Weiss). Lesser Redpoll (Acanthis cabaret) 1 and Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemann) >3 in the flock of 20 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) in the dunes at Liepaja harbor S pier, Liepaja (K.Millers). Common Crane, Wood Pigeon, Redwing and Robin rare during winter months.

11.01.2018. Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) 1 at Liepaja lake near Ezerkrasts bird tower; Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) 2 in Liepaja lake at Zirgu islet; Hedge Accentor (Dunnock) (Prunella modularis) 2 at Zirgu islet, Liepaja (K.Millers). All species rare during winter months. Parrot Crossbill (Loxia pytyopsittacus) 2 observed visually in the flock of ~ 150 Common Crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) at Kalsnava arboretum, Madona county (G.Grandans, N.Weiss). Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) at least 20 in the flock of ~ 300 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Jaungulbene surroundings, Gulbene county (G.Grandans, N.Weiss).
10.01.2018. Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) 1 F/2cy hunting over Pape lake, Rucava county, 1 ad M at Pape lake N end, Nica county (K.Millers, I.Mednis). Most likely the same individuals as at Nica fields, Nica county at least since 22.12.2017. (K.Millers, I.Grinerte). Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) 31 at Pape lake N end, Nica county (K.Millers, I.Mednis). Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) 1 flushed from roadside at Vidale surroundings, Dundaga county (G.Grandans, N.Weiss). Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) 1; Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) 1 at Pape lake N end, Nica county (K.Millers, I.Mednis). All species rare during winter months. 4^th January record of Common Chiffchaff.
08.01.2018. Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) 10 migrating to WSW at Alejas, Kekava county (K.Millers). Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) 1 together with Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Madona, Madona county (G.Grandans, U.Lolans).
07.01.2018. Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) 31 at Uzava river floodplain fields, Ventspils county (I.Grinerte, K.Millers). Largest flock ever during winter months! 23 at Liepaja lake, Liepaja (V. & M.Jaunzemis). Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) 1 2cy/F at Darzini distributary, Salaspils county (M.Tirums). Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) 15 at Uzava river floodplain fields, Ventspils county (K.Millers, I.Grinerte). Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) 2 at Darzini distributary, Salaspils county (M.Tirums). White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) 1 at Ugale surroundings, Ventspils county (E.Kalnina et al.). Despite of former right wing damage freely flying and self-sustaining. Red Kite (Milvus milvus) 1 at Bernati surroundings, Nica county (E.Ledins, U.Riekstins). Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) 2; Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) 2 at Darzini distributary, Salaspils county (M.Tirums). All species rare during winter months. Water Pipit (Anthus spinoletta) 1 at Liepaja harbor S pier, Liepaja (K.Millers, I.Grinerte et al.). 9^th record for Latvia. Present since 06.01.2018. (K.Millers, I.Grinerte, A.Klepers). Lapland Longspur (Calcarius lapponicus) 1 in the flock of ~10 Yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) at Uzava river floodplain fields, Ventspils county (I.Brediks, M.Kilups). Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) 1 together with Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Ozolkalns surroundings, Gulbene county (G.Grandans, U.Lolans), 1 together with Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Jaungulbene surroundings, Gulbene county (G.Grandans, U.Lolans), >4 in the flock of 12 Greenfinches (Chloris chloris) and ~100 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Starti surroundings, Priekuli county (A.Klepers).


06.01.2018. Anser Goose (Anser sp.) ~800 individual mixed flock at Durbe surroundings, Durbe county (A.Klepers). Present since 14.12.2017., when ~400 individual mixed flock of Tundra Bean Geese (Anser serrirostris) and Greater White-fronted Geese (Anser albifrons), Tundra Bean Geese dominates (80%) (K.Millers). Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena) 1 at Liepaja harbor S pier, Liepaja (I.Grinerte, K.Millers). White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) 1 at Berzpils surroundings, Balvu county (K.Pokratniece). Freely flying and self-sustaining bird. Great Egret (Ardea alba) 3 in the pond at shopping center "Dauga", Ogre (A.Kurockins). Common Crane (Grus grus) 2 at Kursisi parish, Saldus county (V.Kveksis). European Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria) at least one individual heard calling in the mixed flock of ~800 Anser Geese (Anser sp.) at Durbe surroundings, Durbe county (A.Klepers). Stock Dove (Columba oenas) 2 flew W at Slampe surroundings, Tukums county (E. & V.Smislovs). Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) 1 at Seaside Park, Liepaja (A.Klepers). All species rare during winter months. Water Pipit (Anthus spinoletta) 1 at Liepaja harbor S pier, Liepaja (K.Millers, I.Grinerte, A.Klepers). Lapland Longspur (Calcarius lapponicus) 1 in the flock of ~25 Snow Buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) at Nica fields, Nica county (K.Millers, I.Grinerte). Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) at least 2 in the flock of ~100 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Pulvera str., at least 2 in the flock of 20 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Liepaja harbor S pier dunes, Liepaja (K.Millers, I.Grinerte).


05.01.2018. Tundra Swan (Cygnus columbianus) 320; Little Gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus) 1 at Uzava river floodplain fields, Ventspils county (A.Klepers). Large number at one place in January of Tundra Swans, Little gull rare inland in January. Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) 1 in the flock of 15 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Uzava river floodplain fields, Ventspils county (A.Klepers).
04.01.2018. Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) 1 at Sunezers lake, Daugavpils (A.Erts). Rare inland at E Latvia during winter months.
03.01.2018. Taiga Bean Goose (Anser fabalis) at least 6, Greylag Goose (Anser anser) 2, Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus) ~300 together with Anser, Branta sp. Geese and Anas sp. Ducks; Common Crane (Grus grus) 2 flying W at Uzava river floodplain fields, Ventspils county (M.Tirums). All species quite rare during winter months. Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) 150-170 at Uzava river floodplain fields, Ventspils county (M.Tirums). For Whooper Swan and Snow Bunting quite large numbers at one place in January.
02.01.2018. Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) 3 (2 MM & 1 F) at Cempu str. pond next to Stiklaskiedra, Valmiera (A.Klepers), at least 20 (6 MM & 14 FF/2cy) at Sarkandaugava distributary, Riga (U.Piterans). Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) 3 at Sarkandaugava distributary, Riga (U.Piterans). Both species quite rare during winter months. Arctic Redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni) 2 together with 3 Common Redpolls (Acanthis flammea) at Dobele (E.Smislovs et al.), 1 at Cesis (S.Laime).
